DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special reading and book sale of Had I a Dove: Appalachian Poets on the Helene Flood. Eleanor Hjemmet will sing her song from the anthology and play guitar. All proceeds from the anthology will benefit the Helene Disaster Relief Fund. \n\nDanita Dodson is the author of three poetry collections: Trailing the Azimuth (2021)\, The Medicine Woods (2022)\, and Between Gone and Everlasting (2024). Her poems are anchored in the landscapes of Northeast Tennessee and have appeared in Salvation South\, Women Speak Anthology\, Untelling\, and elsewhere. Dodson was a recipient of the Poetry Society of Tennessee’s 2024 Best of the Fest Prize. A native of the Clinch River watersheds of Hancock County\, Tennessee\, she loves to hike and explore the narratives of her local wilderness. Read more at www.danitadodson.com. \n\nDavid Winship is a retired public-school educator. A native of Bristol\, Tennessee\, he has returned to his homeplace to age on and age out. He raised his family in the Damascus\, Virginia community which was heavily impacted by Helene. He is director of the Sign of the George Letterpress at King University in Bristol. He actively supports heritage and music education of the Appalachian region. He has two daughters and six grandchildren. He prints a yearly chapbook of his poetry for family and friends. He has also written for the news media and has had dramatic works staged. He annually prints a collection of his poetry for family and friends. \n\nAnn Shurgin is a native of Elizabethton\, Tennessee. Her family descends from a long line of Southern Appalachian settlers. She graduated from East Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in English and journalism and then moved to Houston\, Texas\, one year later\, where she worked in the oil industry for four years. She and her husband then bought a one-acre “ranchette” in the countryside northwest of the city\, where they raised their children and grew a garden year-round. Ann also worked as a journalist for local newspapers and then as a freelance writer and copy editor. She later moved to College Station\, where she worked as a communications specialist and manager for Texas A&M AgriLife. After retirement\, she moved back to Elizabethton\, to the house where she grew up. She is a member of the Southern Appalachian Writers Cooperative and the Appalachian Studies Association and is happy to be back in the mountains of East Tennessee\, where her story began and her heart never left. While the Whippoorwill Called is her first book of poetry. \n\nHilda Downer is the inaugural High Country Poet Laureate and author of four collections of poetry and forthcoming chapbook\, Seeds of Gems and Metals. Her second book\, Sky Under the Roof\, was a Nautilus Golden Poetry Winner in Books for a Better World. She edited the anthology\, Had I a Dove: Appalachian Poets on the Helene Flood released in September 2025 by Redhawk Publications with all proceeds going to the Helene Flood Relief Fund. Had I a Dove won the American Writing Award in the Poetry Anthology category. Retired from teaching English at Appalachian State University\, she has recently retired as a psychiatric nurse. She holds an MFA from Vermont College and is a long-term member of the Southern Appalachian Writers Cooperative\, the Appalachian Studies Association\, North Carolina Writers Network\, and the North Carolina Writers Conference. She grew up in Bandana of Mitchell County\, NC\, and lives in Sugar Grove\, NC.
