SUMMARY:“Dark Side of Light”
DESCRIPTION:Light pollution. How can something as essential as light be considered a pollutant? The answer lies not in light itself\, but instead how we use artificial light at night. \nFor centuries\, we have become accustomed to using artificial light after dark\, treating it as a natural part of our lives. But it isn’t. Living organisms – including plants\, animals\, and humans – have adapted to the natural cycle of day and night for tens of millions of years. Our biological rhythms are closely tied to the rising and setting of the Sun each day. Disrupting this natural cycle with artificial light has serious consequences for our health\, the environment\, and the economy. As artificial lighting continues to increase around the world\, understanding its impacts has never been more important. \nIn this program\, discover what light pollution is\, how it affects our world\, and the simple steps we can take to protect our night skies. This program is followed by a quick look at the constellations\, planets and other celestial wonders visible in the night sky from our region. \nShow length ~ 40 min. \n  \n.avia-button-avb6ae735842a32a:hover {background-color: #444444 !important;color: #ffffff !important;transform: translateZ(0) scale(1.03); }Click here to register online for tickets

SUMMARY:“Comets & Discovery”
DESCRIPTION:This program is much more than a straight narrative about comets. The show takes the viewer on a journey of discovery. We follow two intrepid comet hunters in first-person. One\, a modern explorer peering out into the night sky. The other\, Caroline Herschel. The famous 18th century comet huntress that made many historic comet observations. With both\, we learn how they each searched the skies\, made their discoveries\, and how those discoveries shaped the field of Astronomy. We also learn about\, depending on the century of the observer\, what people thought comets were and their importance to them. All sorts of special filmmaking techniques\, together with a captivating script and sumptuous score\, were used to create this Bays Mountain Production. \nThis program incorporates two live sequences to enhance the learning and fun. The first will be an activity to involve the audience to learn more about the parts of a comet\, the path a comet takes\, and the dust and ion tails that splay out in their correct directions as the comet orbits the sun. The second sequence will use a facility’s star projection system and focus on any upcoming comets to see in the sky and how to view them. \nShow length ~ 40 min. \n  \n.avia-button-avb6ae735842be34:hover {background-color: #444444 !important;color: #ffffff !important;transform: translateZ(0) scale(1.03); }Click here to register online for tickets

\n  \n.avia-button-avb6ae9dc098ae49:hover {background-color: #444444 !important;color: #ffffff !important;transform: translateZ(0) scale(1.03); }Click here to register online for tickets

SUMMARY:Open Doors! at Exchange Place Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:We cordially invite you to attend our second Open Doors! event on Saturday\, November 7.  Hosted by the Junior Apprentice’s and the Eden’s Ridge Hearth Cookery Society\, the event will feature numerous historical demonstrations such as open-hearth cooking\, blacksmithing\, and spinning and weaving to show what life was like at Eden’s Ridge in the mid 19th century. And to continue our theme of celebrating America’s 250th\, we will be giving a nod to our ancestors from the late 18th century too.  Here are some of the exciting activities we have planned: \nFoodways: In the kitchen\, the Eden’s Ridge Hearth Cookery Society will be making receipts (recipes) from the first cookbook written by an American and published in America— American Cookery by Amelia Simmons\, published in 1796 .  In the Cook’s Cabin\, we will be making hoecakes\, the ubiquitous food consumed by nearly all Early Americans from enslaved laborers to presidents. \nLong Hunting: On the Main House front porch\, senior JA John Pace will be dressed in long hunter attire and displaying the accessories and firearms he has acquired for his interpretation\, many of which he made himself. He will be joined by master horner Randy Rauch\, who will be demonstrating the craft of engraving horn receptacles. At a nearby campfire\, JAs will roast game meat that long hunters depended on for sustenance. \nBlacksmithing: In the forge\, blacksmith and JA dad David Pace will be making a squirrel cooker\, a handy device for a frontiersman like Daniel Boone. \nSpinning and Weaving: On the Main House back porch\, Overmountain Weavers Guild member Emory LaPrade will be demonstrating the process of turning flax into linen and JAs will be demonstrating tape weaving. \nChair Weaving: Long-time friend of Exchange Place\, Camille Daffron\, will be demonstrating the heritage craft of chair weaving on the Main House front porch. \nEducation:  In the schoolhouse\, we will host an old-fashioned spelling bee with words from McGuffey’s Readers. \nThere will be opportunities to play old-fashioned games and dance the Virginia Reel too. \nWe hope you can join us as we open the doors to our buildings and open doors to the past! Hours for the event are 10:00am-4:00pm.  Admission is $5 for guests 12 and older with those under 12 admitted free. Any changes or cancellations due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances will be posted via these venues.
