Celebrate Friendships This Galentine’s Day

Much like Friendsgiving, an alternative holiday to Thanksgiving when people celebrate with friends, Galentine’s Day (Feb. 13th) has become the go-to option for women to celebrate the joys of female friendship.

Merriam-Webster attributes the term “Galentine’s Day” to Leslie Knope, a character on NBC’s sitcom “Parks and Recreation.” In Knope’s words, “Every February 13th, my ladyfriends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies!”

While its origins lie in comedy, its goal is sincere – bookmarking a day to honor the friendships that sustain us through the rest of the year. And it’s conveniently scheduled for the day before Valentine’s Day, so it won’t interrupt plans you may have with a significant other.

Brunch and More

Kicking it “breakfast-style” is certainly an option, and while Galentine’s Day fun isn’t limited to mimosas and frittatas, there are plenty of places in Kingsport to get your brunch on with friends.

Evelyn’s Kitchen Table offers a waffle menu that would make Leslie Knope proud, plus a wide variety of hearty omelets, grit bowls, and breakfast platters. Evelyn’s often uses local ingredients and features a different brunch menu every day. Bring your own bottle for the full brunch experience. Evelyn’s is open this Feb. 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
