A dynamic and colorful new mural – one that’s out of this world – is being created in downtown Kingsport this week.

Joseph Maye – owner of the Now or Never Tattoo Shop of Kingsport – is currently spray-painting a new mural on E. Sullivan Street. Maye started on the mural earlier this week and said he expects to finish up in just a few days.

“I’ve got a lot more detail to add, but I can do most murals in a couple of days,” Maye said. “Working in spray paint allows me to work 10 times faster than most people.”

The new mural will feature Bays Mountain and Eastman in the background and include details such as cats in spaceships, cedar trees, camellia flowers and various legendary creatures.

If you’ve traveled through downtown Kingsport, chances are you’ve seen some of Maye’s other murals – the interior of Galaxy Pizza, the great blue heron (at the corner of Sullivan and Center), Lady Justice (on the Taylor Law Office building), High Voltage, Backwoods Burger and Le Brique Bistro on Market Street.

Maye has also done murals recently in Johnson City and Elizabethton and has six more lined up for the month of May.

“I love it. If I could get paid enough to do this, I would love to travel across the country and just do murals,” Maye said.
