When it comes to style, many people take their cues from the runways of New York, Los Angeles, Paris, or Milan.
If you don’t have the time to flip through high fashion look-books or the cash to jet set to the world’s fashion meccas, you’ve come to the right place—today we’re sharing fall’s latest fashion trends and tips from some local experts.
Chassity McWhirter, fashion blogger
According to style blogger Chassity McWhirter, western wear isn’t just for the stars in Nashville anymore! With A-listers like Gigi Hadid and Cardi B showing off their fringed leather and duster jackets, McWhirter predicts western wear will be a hot trend this fall with relaxed denim and bold colors taking the lead. Prairie dresses, classic cowboy boots, and hats were runway staples, so dust off that button-down denim skirt and pair it with a billowing blouse for an on-trend look.
McWhirter also shared that sweater vests are coming back this fall, although a looser fit than those that were popular during the late 90s and early 2000s will be more on trend for 2021.
When we asked what she is most looking forward to seeing this fall, McWhirter said “pink puff sleeves and oversized tops.”
If you’re looking to update your accessories for the cooler weather, she said “Anything smiley faced or chunky gold” is a sure bet.
McWhirter said, “American Eagle/Aerie, Target, Walmart, and the Wooden Hanger, a local boutique, are very affordable places to get good buys on the latest trends.”

Erin Wingfield, nano influencer
Almost everyone has a basic white sweater in their closet waiting for the perfect outfit, but sometimes it can be overwhelming or intimidating to create a fashion-forward fall look. That’s where Erin Wingfield comes in. Erin shares three ways you can style that one white sweater to be anything but basic and perfect for fall.
LOOK 1: CASUAL
Pairing the sweater with distressed jeans and clogs is a great look for a long day at the pumpkin patch or while you’re rooting on your football team from the stands. A looser fit sweater and fitted jeans creates a flattering silhouette, and the clogs look stylish and keep your feet comfortable all day so you can make it to that late-night bonfire.
LOOK 2: NIGHT OUT
Top a pair of faux leather leggings with your sweater and add some sleek black heels for date night or opt for chunky boots for meeting friends to sample the seasonal, local brew on tap! A wide brim hat can add a finishing touch while offering some protection from unpredictable fall weather.
LOOK 3: SUNDAY BRUNCH
Layer your sweater over a colorful plaid or floral dress for Sunday morning brunch. Choosing a tiered dress will add some dimension to your outfit without adding too much bulk, while the sweater will allow a few more wears of those warm weather frocks before you take them out of rotation for the season. Repurpose the boots and hat from look 2 to add unexpected flair to your outfit.
Ashley Gentry, owner of BluLis Boutique
Ashley Gentry and her mom, Melissa Millsap, have operated BluLis Boutique in downtown Kingsport together since 2021.
“Fall fashion is hands-down my favorite time of year,” Gentry said. She said that if you want to dress like an icon this fall, you will need to add some chunky boots, oversized flannels, and boho sweaters to your wardrobe staples.
When asked about which trends she thinks are hot this year, Gentry said the “shacket” is making a triumphant return. “The concept of a shirt and jacket combined into one offers endless possibilities for styling,” she said.
BluLis is located at 205 Wexler Street in downtown Kingsport.
