Kingsport boasts abundant permanent and temporary public artwork, with multiple sculptures that invigorate public spaces. Kingsport Cultural Arts (KCA) has created a handy digital guide to help residents and visitors discover and enjoy artwork around downtown.
Both local and national artists have created beautiful forms across a wide range of subject matter and materials. The variety and quality of these pieces easily rival much larger cities, and we’re happy to have a city that’s alive with art.
Visit the Goat Trail and Sculpture Walk website and plan a trip to enjoy the pieces in person or take a virtual tour through each of the entries.
Goat Trail
Five life-sized, uniquely designed and smile-inducing fiberglass goats can be found between the boundaries of East Main and East Sullivan streets.
The goat sculptures started as “The Herd – A Public Art Project” that featured 10 goats designed by local artists that moved around the city. The goats were unveiled in 2023 at the Greatest of All Time (G.O.A.T.) Festival: A Celebration of the Arts.
The sculptures were inspired by a herd of real goats who were invited to Cement Hill to safely clear foliage, including invasive kudzu, for development. They did their job well and in the most environmentally friendly way.
KCA has created a handy map for your goat-spotting enjoyment. Click here for the interactive Goat Trail map, filter by Goat Trail and click on the location markers for more information, including the address of each goat.
Sculpture Walk
Art in public spaces creates community, inspires thought, sparks conversation and draws people in to enjoy the simple pleasure of something beautiful, whimsical, serious or thought-provoking.
Make a plan to enjoy the six unique sculptures in the Sculpture Walk. Several are cast, forged and designed in an array of metals. Other sculptures are left in their given patinas, encouraged to naturally age, while some feature bright colors. The artwork reflects multiple themes, such as a nod to industry or a spotlight on wildlife, for example.
Each entry has an informative detailed entry on the website that features images, discusses the materials used and includes an artist bio and statement about the sculpture with interesting facts about the inspiration or meaning for the piece or how it was made.
In addition to the official stops on the downtown Sculpture Walk, you’ll find many more sculptures and public art along the way and all over town.
The artwork is intended to get residents and visitors to engage with their surroundings and pay attention to the environment and each other. It provides a source of pride in our city and fosters togetherness and belonging.
Take a stroll around our downtown sculptures and appreciate the ways these pieces make Kingsport inviting and unique.
